The history of Southwest and West Central New Mexico is steeped in old southwestern lore. It’s often commemorated in memorials such as one found right on Main street in Reserve, New Mexico.
Ah, folklore. It’s such a fun and historically significant bonus when traveling. A great example is in Reserve, New Mexico where you’ll encounter a memorial to 19 year-old Elfego Baca, whose heroic gunfight with murderous drunken Texas cowboys in 1884. The legendary shootout led Elfego to purging them of vengefulness for having arrested a fellow cowboy. Such is a prime example of New Mexico folklore that makes our huge part of New Mexico (Catron county), so uniquely interesting.
Many other historical markers and monuments are scattered throughout southwest and west central New Mexico so when you come to enjoy our part of the world you’ll definitely benefit by having this online database of other markers at your fingertips.
